Whether you’re taking a road trip or just running a few errands around town, it’s important to keep your furry friend safe and secure in the car, ideally while also giving them a view to enjoy out the window! Here are a few easy DIY solutions that will fit any budget and keep your pup happy and safe on the road.
Option 1: The Doggy Booster Seat
If you’ve got a small dog, a doggy booster seat is a great option. You can find booster seats for dogs online or at your local pet store, but they can be fairly pricey. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, you can easily make your own for a fraction of the cost. Simply choose a sturdy fabric—canvas or denim will work well—and make a rectangle that’s big enough for your dog to sit comfortably in. Sew two loops of fabric onto the back of the seat, thread a seatbelt through the loops, and voila! You’ve got a safe and secure way for your pup to ride in style.
Option 2: The Patio Cushion Method
If you’ve got a medium-sized dog, a simple patio cushion can allow them to see out the car while still keeping them restrained. Start by measuring your dog from nose to tail to find out how long of a cushion you’ll need. Once you’ve got your cushion, simply strap it into the backseat using some Bungee cords or zip ties, and you’re all set!
Option 3: The DIY Kennel Crate
For larger dogs, nothing beats the security of a kennel crate. But buying one can be expensive, and they can be challenging to transport if you don’t have a large car. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution: simply make your own kennel crate out of PVC pipe! Start by measuring your dog and cut four pieces of PVC pipe to size based on those measurements. Then, assemble the PVC pipes into a rectangle using PVC connectors. Finally, cover the frame with wire mesh using zip ties or pliers, and voila! You’ve got yourself a sturdy DIY kennel crate that’s perfect for road trips or errands around town.
